The difference between classic IVF and ICSI?

Often the two terms are confused. Read below why they are different.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) are two techniques used as treatments to treat infertility.

In both ICSI and IVF, fertilization occurs outside the female body. The resulting embryo is then transplanted into the uterus.

The main difference between ICSI and IVF is that with the ICSI technique, a predetermined morphologically correct sperm is injected into the cytoplasm of meiotically mature and morphologically orderly ova, while in classical IVF the egg and sperm are placed in special vessels where self-fertilization occurs. ICSI technique requires more effort and time, and an experienced embryologist, but also gives better results while IVF occurs with spontaneous eventual fertilization.
