Endometrial scratching

Scratching the endometrium or scratching the lining of the endometrium

Embryo implantation is a complex process and some common causes of failure may be due to poor endometrial mucosa or a genetically abnormal embryo.

Patients who have multiple failed medically assisted fertilization procedures despite apparently good embryo quality may be candidates for endometrial screeching, which has been shown in several randomized studies to improve implantation rates in women who have had repeated implant failures.

What is endometrial scratching?

Endometrial scraching is one of the procedures offered during medically assisted fertilization to improve embryo implantation and pregnancy rates.

In order for a patient to become pregnant, the embryo must be 'implanted' in the uterus.

Most embryos do not implant because they could not be fully developed by the implantation stage or because of a developmental mismatch between the embryo phase and the uterine lining.

However, in a small number of cases, the embryo will not be implanted because the uterine lining does not provide an adequate environment.

Endometrial stretchingis performed during preparation for embryo transfer. During the procedure, the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is "scratched" with a small sterile plastic catheter.

It is believed that this procedure triggers the body to repair the scratch site, releasing chemicals and hormones that make the lining of the uterus more sensitive to embryo implantation. Some also suggest that this procedure may activate genes that make the lining of the uterus more acceptable for embryo implantation.

How safe is this procedure for patients?

Although this is a simple procedure, some patients may experience nausea, pain, and mild bleeding. There is a small risk that if you have a cervical infection before "scratching", it can cause the infection to spread to the uterus.

Endometrial scratching does not carry any additional known risks to the child born as a result of infertility treatment.
