IUI vs IVF

At the New Life Sarajevo polyclinic, our specialists and doctors can guide you through the differences between IUI and IVF procedures and help you decide which option is best for you.

The two most commonly used medical treatments for infertility are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). If after several months you are unable to conceive through spontaneous unprotected intercourse, it may be time to think about the possibilities and types of infertility treatment.

You probably have questions and concerns about what each of these treatments can do for you and how they differ. At the New Life Sarajevo polyclinic, our specialists and doctors can guide you through the differences between IUI and IVF procedures and help you decide which option is best for you.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure

During the insemination procedure, the sperm of the male partner is inserted once or twice into the uterus of the future mother or surrogate in the days after her ovulation.

By injecting sperm directly into the uterus, IUI increases the chances that the sperm and egg will meet to create a fertilized embryo. The use of higher concentrations of quality sperm also increases the possibility of successful conception and pregnancy.

Advantages and disadvantages of IUI

The IUI procedure is often chosen because it takes less time and is usually less expensive than IVF. During the IUI procedure, the male partner's (or donor's) sperm is inserted directly into the uterus. The process is initiated during the ovulation of the female partner.

Intrauterine insemination is usually recommended for women under 35 because women in this age range have a higher rate of successful conception than women over 35. Women aged 40 or older have the lowest success rate with IUI, with only about a 5% chance of a successful pregnancy.

It is also important to note that since IUI can be combined with the use of ovarian stimulation drugs, the possibility of twins or triplets is higher.

Often, women opt for two to three rounds of the IUI procedure, and if that fails, they start the IVF procedure.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure

In vitro fertilization is one of the most popular and successful methods of treating infertility. As mentioned earlier, if three or more rounds of IUI fail, our doctors recommend trying IVF. In this method, fertility drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries, which stimulates the production of more than one egg at a time.

Once mature, the eggs are retrieved and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus. Once this embryo transfer procedure is complete, the embryos can attach to the uterine wall, resulting in pregnancy.

Why couples use IVF procedures?

In general, IVF has a higher success rate than intrauterine insemination. It is the recommended method for women over 40 years of age.

In addition, IVF gives your doctor and fertility specialist more control over the number of embryos that will be transferred into the uterus, which reduces the risk of having twins or triplets.

However, IVF requires more fertility drugs and has more overall costs. The IVF procedure is more expensive than intrauterine insemination, so a consultation with our specialist regarding the cause of your infertility will be necessary to determine whether IVF or IUI is the right choice for you.

How to decide between IVF and IUI?

The best way to determine whether IUI or IVF is the right choice for you is to consult with our doctors at the New Life Sarajevo polyclinic. Although you may have already made a decision on which preferred procedure you want, our doctors and other specialists can provide you with expert information and recommendations based on your age, general health status, the cause of your infertility and other parameters.

In principle, younger couples have more success with IUI procedures, and may generally be better candidates for this medical treatment. However, if fertilization is not successful and more cycles of IUI are needed, this service may require higher financial resources. Therefore, it is necessary to balance the overall costs, benefits, risks and other parameters before making a final decision.
