What is and who should do the AMH test?

The importance of AMH hormone

AMH (Anti- Mullerov hormon)- hormone ovarijalne rezerve

1. What is AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the ovaries, or primary follicles in the ovaries. The level of AMH gives us information about the ovarian reserve (eg how many eggs are available), compared to other women of the same age.

2. Why is AMH important?
Unlike men who constantly produce sperm, women are born with a lifelong supply of eggs. It is very important to know the ovarian reserve, especially if you are planning a baby. Also, it is important to know that the level of AMH does not predict the chances of natural conception.

3. What is the AMH test?
It is a hormonal test that evaluates the number of eggs, or follicles, in a woman's ovaries. This information gives the specialist gynecologist an idea of how many eggs the ovaries are able to produce, how suitable a particular IVF procedure is, and the chances of a successful procedure.

4. Who should do the AMH test?
Women who are planning IVF or any fertility treatment procedure, do this test, along with a number of other parameters such as ultrasound assessment of antral follicles. It creates the possibility for us to adapt the method of in vitro fertilization for each patient, with the aim of the best possible outcome.

5. What factors contribute to low AMH?
The age of the patient affects the level of AMH. Although every woman has a different number of antral follicles. Ovarian reserve decreases dramatically over time. Their number gradually decreases until the age of 30, after which the decrease accelerates, and even faster after the age of 35. There are certain circumstances where the AMH level is inaccurate, where the patient is on the pill or has hypothalamic dysfunction.

6. How are the results of the AMH test measured?
The AMH test does not measure the quality, but the quantity of eggs, and can be an indicator of the expected number of eggs in IVF procedures. It is very important to interpret AMH values together with other factors that affect fertility. The test is done by sampling blood at our clinic and the results are ready in 7-10 days.

7. What can be done in case of low AMH hormone?
There is no therapy to increase the number of eggs produced in the ovaries. The only thing that can be done is to act proactively. If the patient comes with low AMH and presents her infertility problem, certain measures must be taken as soon as possible.
